Paanch Pokhari Lake is a group of five glacial lakes located in Sindhupalchowk district of Nepal. Located at an elevation of 4,100 meters (13,451 feet) above sea level, the lakes are considered sacred by locals. The name “Paanch Pokhari” translates to ” Five Lakes” in English. Each of the five lakes has a unique name and meaning in Hindu mythology. These lakes are believed to have been created by Lord Shiva when he thrust his trident (Trishul) into the ground to quench his thirst after consuming poison released by the Devas (gods) during Samudra Manthan (Stirring the Ocean). Asura appeared (demon). The picturesque surroundings of the lake include alpine forests, hills and snow-capped peaks. The area is also home to a variety of flora and fauna, including the endangered red panda. Paanch Pokhari Lake is a popular trekking destination and many tourists and pilgrims visit the area during the Janai Purnima festival in August, when Hindu devotees come to bathe in the sacred waters of the lake. The trek to Paanch Pokhari is a challenging journey that requires good physical fitness and stamina, but the rewards of experiencing the beauty and tranquility of the lake are well worth it.
